Should You Get a Job?
This may seem like a dumb question. I mean most of us need a job but a lot of us don’t care about getting the right job or if it is even the correct time to get one. Maybe you should get an internship, or maybe you should start your own business (although be careful because that can become a job real quick).
NOTE: This section of the newsletter is more designed for young adults who may have never had a job in the Arch Viz industry. If you are older I provide the list of tips and resources near the bottom of this newsletter.
Not only this but there is a big difference between a job and a career, I mean I didn’t really know the difference until I started looking into them. Basically, a Career is something you build up over long periods of time, you continuously work to get better at the skills because you like it and you would even do it without getting paid. On the other hand, a job seems more temporary, it’s something that you do to survive and earn enough money to pay rent.
❝
A job involves strength it’s like cycling up a steep hill and eventually you will burn out and fall to the bottom, a career is like going down that hill, if you pick the right one it feels like you can ride it forever.
Now that we have pinpointed the difference between a job and a career you might understand that we actually want a career. Especially in this industry, the level you will reach directly correlates to how good you are at networking and learning new software. That’s why a beginner may not want or even be able to get a job as an Arch Viz Artist and you may need to aim lower, cheaper, or for an internship. To begin in this industry I see that the easiest way to do so is by getting an internship. If you need a bit of money then you can always become an assistant for the position you want to become in the future, if you fit all requirements except for experience you may be able to ask for a cheaper hourly rate to get the position.
Now it is important that you make the most out of these positions, if you don’t you may stay there for longer than you expected and that’s no good. Make sure to work hard and ask for advice so that you can learn and show people you are good enough for the position.
Finding the Right Position
For beginners, I already said what type of positions there are but these may be different in each Niche, I always suggest doing your own research. In this case, we will focus on Architectural Visualisation, but most of these will adapt to other niches such as Environment Artists or Generalists.
Exterior Artist
Interior Artist
Modeller
Animator
Texture Artist
etc.
These are some general but common positions for artists in the Arch Viz pipeline, all of these are in high demand especially if you know the right software (which we will get into in a future post). Apart from this, you may want to become a freelancer and work for yourself, get a job at a studio or firm, and even start your own. In most cases, unless you become an employee you will need to know all steps of the general pipeline.
The Top 3 Places to Get High-Paying Jobs
This is what you came looking for and as promised, here it is. I believe that deciding exactly what job you want to take in order to kickstart your career is the best way to find the best opportunities. These next websites will show you where to find jobs as a newcomer or will help you find the next high-paying job as an expert in the field.
CGArchitect is one of the hubs for Arch Viz, this is where a lot of industry professionals spend their time looking for talent and inspiration. In this case, you can go to the Jobs section where you can find all sorts of jobs, from beginner jobs to remote jobs, and lead high-paying jobs.
Indeed is a very good website to find both remote and in-person positions. I have personally found multiple positions over 95k a year for Arch Viz although these normally had many specifications I don’t think you would find any trouble getting a 70k job if you know the right software.
LinkedIn is a powerful tool at the time of finding new jobs, it is also a good way of establishing new connections with recruiters who may even ask you for a job if they like your work. This can be a good place to find a lot of options and it is easy and fast to send multiple applications.
I hope these 3 websites were helpful but in case you know of any others that might be of help please write them in the comments! If you have any ideas for next week’s post let me know there, it lets me know what sort of topics you want to hear and I will give credit!
